We had a house fire and needed to move in with our son and his family for a few months. His older refrigerator had a non-working ice maker and we were buying 3 large bags of ice per week to accommodate 2 families. We purchased this unit knowing it would take a while to pay for itself. What we didn't realize was how great the ice production is, how clear and good tasting the ice is and how much we would increase our ice usage because of it. Being a handy-man I did my own installation which was pretty straight forward. The ice maker almost totally filled overnight. As per the instructions I discarded the first production and it has been filling glasses and coolers for the 6 weeks since. If you want clear, abundant ice this is the unit for you.

It needed service right out of the box

From the first day that it was turned on, my ice maker was very loud. The noise sounded like the circulation pump and/or the coolng fan. This level of noise might have been acceptable in a kitchen environment, but my ice maker was put in the consessions area in the back of a home theater where one wants to hear the movie and not the ice maker. My contractors and everyone who went anywhere near the ice maker all shared the same comments: "What is that noise?" or "Is that thing always this loud?" I could not leave the ice maker on while I was watching a movie. My call to Kitchenaid compaining about the noise coming from my ice maker did generate a visit from their official service technician. The service technician's response after examining the unit was to suggest that I call Kitchenaid and ask for a replacement ice maker. Kitchenaid's response to my request for a replacement ice maker was an emphatic "NO." They had to try to fix it first. So, the service technican ordered all the parts he thought necessary. After a long service visit to replace the cooling fan motor, the cooling fan blade, and the motor mount/fan shrould assembly with a differently designed set of parts, most of the noise is gone. As for the long-term performance of my ice maker, I can only hope that any other probems happen before my warranty expires. Do I recommend this product? Ask me in 90 days or so after I see if anything else fails.
